The Front door selfie

April 11, 2020 Update:  I posted the linked blog below on March 27th when we were just a couple days into the first Stay-At-Home order.  At the time we thought we would be free to live life as we knew it within a couple of weeks.  Since then, the order has been extended another two weeks.  The organization I chose at the time to donate to was the Domestic Violence Hotline – a cause that I have supported as often as possible since my cousin was killed by her estranged husband last July in front of her two small children.  I was worried that the Stay-At-Home order would cause tough home situations to escalate and felt the hotline needed more support.

Here in Indianapolis we experienced this first hand when one of our 24 yr old police officers, Breann Leath, a young mother herself, was killed in the line of duty when responding to a domestic violence call.  Please consider supporting to the fund that will be set up by the police department in her honor as well as the National Domestic Violence Hotline or any of the other organizations supporting our struggling Hoosiers during these tough times.  I have links to some organizations on my blog at

To receive a free digital “front door”  photo all you need to do is live in Greenwood, Indiana, email a copy of your donation (the amount can be removed) and your front door selfie to  Once we can return to life as we love, I will make arrangements to come by and take your photo in front of your door.  As a passionate photographer in your community, I look forward to saying thank you to you for your generous donation to help others in the form of a professional digital photo.

This photo will be a great document of your family during the year of the pandemic whether your family is like me and my dog, a house full of little children, or multiple generations under one roof.  And have fun with it!  You can all be in PJs, all dressed in similar colors, include your pets, pretend to be breaking away from the house for the first time, whatever!  Make it a cherished photo you will look at many years from now to remember the time life made us stop and smell the roses in our own homes.  There’s another idea – everybody smelling roses!  Ha!

Original Post:

My daughter shared a post with me about #TheFrontStepsProject where family portraits are taken on their front porches and the fee was “Pay What you May”.  All of the proceeds went to charities.  About the time I was prepared to move forward with that idea, our state activated the “Stay At Home” order.  As I was trying to figure out a way to proceed, a couple other photographers here in Indiana (Sandra Shinkfield ( and Becky at Always Happy Life Photography ( crafted #TheFrontDoorSelfie!!

So – I am joining in on the movement #thefrontdoorselfie and offer this to families of the Greenwood, Indiana area.

Here is how you can help your community:

  1. Make a donation to a charitable organization of your choice.  Snap a pic of the receipt (you can remove the amount if you prefer).
  2. Take a selfie of your family and/or pet in front of or inside your house.  This could be by your front door, back door, patio door, garage door – inside or outside – you just need a door in the photo.
  3. Send both the selfie and charity receipt to with a note that says #TheFrontDoorSelfie.
  4. And of course, post you selfie to neighborhood facebook page! Share! Share!

When COVD-19 is no longer a threat to our community and Indiana lifts the Stay At Home order, I will reach out to you and set up a quick session to photograph your family in front of your front door.  This should take no more than 15 minutes of your time.  Then you’ll receive a digital file as my thanks for participating in this very important time of our lives.  We can all do our part to flatten the curve.

Someday you’ll look back on these photos and remember the lessons we taught our families and tell stories about how you helped your community.

You can choose a charitable organization of your choice but here are some ideas:

Salvation Army Red Shield Center of Johnson County:

CARE Pantry:

The Refuge:

CDC Foundation:

National Domestic Violence Hotline:

The American Red Cross:

COVID-19 United Way Relief Fund

My photography colleagues – Want to participate?  #thefrontdoorselfie  Let’s share because we are all better in this world together!
